Who it is for

Discontinued: the Handicare 4000 is the current lift for these riders

Handicare has discontinued the 2000. The two riders it was suggested for, a rider over 275 lb (125 kg) and a rider who needs a perch seat, are served today by the current Handicare 4000. If you still want a 2000, ask us: it is a special order, and we confirm first whether a unit can be supplied.

A rider over 275 lb (125 kg)

The current Handicare 4000 is rated 300 lb (136 kg), or 350 lb (159 kg) as an option. The Flow X and the Freecurve stop at 275 lb (125 kg).

A rider who needs a perch seat

The Handicare 4000 offers a perch seat, for a rider who has trouble bending at the hip or knee. It is a perching seat, not a standing platform.

If you still want a 2000

Special order, confirm first. We ask Savaria whether a unit can be supplied, and confirm its figures for the unit offered before anything is ordered.

For most curved stairs, compare the current lifts: the Access BDD Flow X, the Handicare Freecurve and the Handicare 4000. Compare the curved lifts

Seats

Three seats, one with a perch option

Smart, Simplicity and Style seats. Simplicity swivels by hand and has a retractable belt; Style adds powered options.

The Smart seat came as a standard, perch or fixed seat. With a perch seat the rider leans on the seat rather than sitting fully, and the owner's manual says never to ride the stairlift standing.

A powered hinge could move the bottom of the track clear of a doorway.

A 90 or 180 degree parking curve could take the chair off the stairs.

What a Handicare 2000 needs from your stairs

What happens next

From first call to first ride

  1. We measure your stairs

At your home, free. We look at the turns, both landings, nearby doors and the power outlet, and talk through who will ride and how they get on and off.

  2. You get a written, itemized quote

It names the model, the rail route, the seat and options, and the installation work.

  3. You decide

The rail is made only after you approve the quote.

  4. We install it and hand it over

Ask us to show you the controls, the swivel, parking and charging before we leave.

Questions

Short answers to what people ask about the Handicare 2000

Every answer starts with the short version. Tap Read more for the rest.

Call (905) 798-1853

Will it fit

Can a 2000 go on narrow stairs?

Handicare publishes no stair width or chair figures for the 2000 today. Read more

The room it needs is confirmed for the unit offered, at the free assessment.

What this means for you: Measure the narrowest point if you like, but do not rule anything out yourself. We measure the width, the rail side and the folded chair at the free assessment.

See the 2000 figures

How steep can the stairs be?

Handicare publishes no maximum angle for the 2000, so we confirm the angle and the rail design at the assessment. Read more

What this means for you: You do not need to measure the angle. We do that at the assessment.

See the 2000 figures

There is a door near the bottom step. What then?

A powered hinge could move the bottom of the track clear of a doorway, and a 90 or 180 degree parking curve could take the chair off the stairs. Read more

What this means for you: If you can, measure from the bottom step to the nearest door or wall and tell us when you book. The rail end is chosen at the assessment.

Show 5 more questions

Can it go on a spiral staircase, or stop at a landing?

The 2000 was built for 90 and 180 degree turns, spirals and large-radius curves, and for straight runs with a landing. Read more

Handicare does not document a stop partway up.

What this means for you: Tell us where the rider gets on and off. The rail is drawn to match your stairs.

How much weight can it carry?

Handicare no longer publishes figures for the 2000, so its rated load is confirmed for the unit offered. Read more

For a rider over 275 lb (125 kg), the current Handicare 4000 is rated 300 lb (136 kg), or 350 lb (159 kg) as an option.

What this means for you: Tell us the rider's weight when you book, so we check the special-order route first.

See the Handicare 4000

Can the rider stay in a wheelchair, or stand?

A stairlift carries one seated rider, who moves from a wheelchair onto the seat. Read more

The 2000 is not a standing lift: its perch seat on the Smart seat is for a rider who cannot bend fully, and the current Handicare 4000 offers a perch seat too. If the rider needs to stay in the wheelchair, a platform lift is the one to look at.

What this means for you: Tell us how the rider gets on and off a chair today. We check the transfer at the assessment.

See porch and platform lifts

Can a stairlift go on outdoor steps?

Not the 2000: its outdoor version is discontinued. Read more

For curved steps outside, ask about the Handicare 4000 outdoor package where Savaria offers it. For a straight run outside, the Handicare 1000 has an outdoor package for suitable sites, and for front steps a porch lift is another option.

What this means for you: Tell us about the steps, the weather they face and who uses them. We look at the outdoor options with you at the assessment.

What is a perch seat?

A perching seat on the Smart seat, for a rider who has trouble bending at the hip or knee. Read more

The rider leans on the seat rather than sitting fully. It is not a standing platform: the owner's manual says never to use the stairlift standing.

What this means for you: Tell us how the rider sits and stands today. We check at the assessment whether a perch seat suits them.

Power and safety

Does the 2000 work in a power cut?

The 2000 runs on batteries charged at points normally at the top and bottom of the track. Read more

How many trips it makes without power is confirmed for the unit offered.

What this means for you: Leave the chair parked at a charge point, normally at the top or bottom of the stairs, so the batteries stay full for when the power goes out.

See the 2000 figures

Do I need an outlet near the stairs?

Yes. The lift charges from a household outlet near the rail. Read more

We look at where yours is at the assessment.

What this means for you: No outlet close to the stairs? Mention it when you book.

Book the free home assessment

Can I keep children or visitors from riding it?

Yes. A key switch is standard on the 2000, to stop the lift being used without the key. Read more

What this means for you: Keep the key with the rider, or somewhere the children cannot reach.

Show 1 more question

What safety features does it have?

The 2000 had pressure-sensitive safety edges on the footplate, an overspeed governor, a retractable belt and a key switch. Read more

What this means for you: Features do not replace a check of the rider. At the assessment we watch how the rider gets on and off and uses the controls.

Living with it

Will installing it damage my stairs?

At the assessment we check the stair structure and where the rail supports can be fixed, before a unit is offered. Read more

What this means for you: Ask us to show you where the supports would sit on your treads.

Can the rest of the family still use the stairs?

A 90 or 180 degree parking curve could take the chair off the stairs, and we plan where it parks around the people who use them. Read more

March of Dimes Canada lists stairlifts among the home adaptations its Home and Vehicle Modification Program can fund for eligible Ontario residents. Read more

For a custom or curved lift, the application asks for photos before installation, drawings and measurements.

What this means for you: Apply before anything is installed. The program decides who qualifies and how much, not us.
