Indoors or out

The same lift for steps outside

Savaria makes an outdoor package for the 1000 for moderate climates: plastic parts that resist UV light, hardware coated in zinc, and a slate vinyl seat made for the weather, with a cover.

  • Savaria says it suits moderate climates, and that how it fares depends on the climate and on how close the stairs are to salt water
  • The powered options are not available on outdoor units
  • We talk through where it goes, how it is covered and what winter means for your steps

If sitting down is hard

A perch seat for indoor stairs

A perch seat lets the rider lean rather than sit, for knees or hips that do not bend easily. Savaria offers it on the 1000 for indoor use, rated 300 lb (136 kg).

  • We check how the rider gets on and off at both landings before suggesting it

A heavier rider

Rated 350 lb, or 440 lb with the high-capacity seat

The Smart seat adjusts for height, the width between the arms and the seat depth. Folded, the 1000 is 15 ⅛ in (385 mm) deep.

Standard

Smart seat

Rated 350 lb (159 kg). Cacao, sand or slate, with a 5-point harness as an option.

For a heavier rider

Smart seat, 440 lb

The high-capacity version, rated 440 lb (200 kg).

It folds out wider; we check the room on your stairs.

Indoor stairs

Perch seat

Rated 300 lb (136 kg). For a rider who finds it easier to lean than to sit.

A door near the stairs

A hinged rail for a door at the bottom

The bottom of the rail can fold up out of a doorway, by hand or powered. At the top, brackets can stop the rail at the top step.

Bottom door

Hinged rail

Lifts the end of the rail clear of the doorway, by hand or powered.

Savaria gives a narrower stair angle range with the hinged rail; we check yours.

Top door

Rail-extension brackets

Mounts the top of the rail so the chair parks clear of a door at the top.

Questions

Handicare 1000 questions

Anything else, ask us. Most answers take a minute on the phone.

Call (905) 798-1853

How much does a Handicare 1000 cost?

It depends on the lift, the rail, the seat and options, and the installation. We measure for free and give you a written quote. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.

How we price

A door opens at the foot of our stairs. Can we still have one?

Yes, usually: the bottom of the rail can hinge up by hand or powered, and rail-extension brackets can stop it at the top step. We choose the right one at the measure.

See the ways to clear a door

Does the 1000 work in a power cut?

Yes, for several trips, Savaria says. It charges at both ends of the stairs, so park it at one of them.

How much weight can the 1000 carry?

The Smart seat is rated 350 lb (159 kg), or 440 lb (200 kg) in its high-capacity version; the perch seat 300 lb (136 kg).

Can the 1000 go outside?

Yes, with the outdoor package, which Savaria makes for moderate climates. The powered options are not available on outdoor units.

See outdoor stairlifts

What is a perch seat?

A seat the rider leans on rather than sits in, for knees or hips that do not bend easily. Savaria offers it on the 1000 for indoor use, rated 300 lb (136 kg).
