Frequently asked questions

What is a pressure relief mattress?

A pressure relief mattress reduces pressure on the body to prevent bedsores (pressure ulcers). Types include foam mattresses, alternating pressure mattresses that inflate/deflate air cells, and low air loss mattresses for maximum pressure relief. Essential for anyone spending extended time in bed.

Does ADP cover pressure relief mattresses in Ontario?

Funding depends on the device and your situation. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first. Some people have coverage through Veterans Affairs, WSIB or private insurance, and we prepare the quote and product details they ask for. Alternating pressure mattresses can also be rented.

What is the difference between alternating pressure and low air loss mattresses?

Alternating pressure mattresses have air cells that inflate and deflate in cycles to shift pressure points. Low air loss mattresses continuously circulate air to keep skin cool and dry. Low air loss is better for existing wounds and moisture management. Alternating pressure is good for prevention.

Where can I buy a medical mattress in Toronto?

We sell medical mattresses across Toronto and the GTA: hospital innerspring, pressure relief foam, alternating pressure and low air loss mattresses, with delivery arranged for you. We also rent alternating pressure mattresses for short-term needs.

How do I choose the right medical mattress?

Choose by the level of pressure injury risk: foam for low risk, alternating pressure for moderate risk and low air loss for high risk, then check weight capacity and bed size. Your nurse or therapist can advise, and we offer free consultations to help you choose.

Is there an income limit for ADP?

No. ADP has no income test: Ontario residents with a valid health card and a qualifying long-term physical disability may be eligible. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first.

How often can I get new equipment through ADP?

ADP sets a usage period for each device type; for example, a wheelchair is usually replaced no sooner than every five years. After the usage period you may qualify for a replacement if you still need the device, and sooner if your needs change significantly.

Can I upgrade my ADP equipment?

Yes. You can choose features beyond what ADP approves and pay the difference. You pay your share plus the cost of any upgrades, and we show you both before anything is ordered.

What documents do I need for ADP application?

You need a valid Ontario health card and an assessment by an ADP authorizer (usually an occupational or physical therapist). The application has sections for you, for the authorizer and for us as the ADP registered vendor; your authorizer will tell you if a physician also needs to sign. We guide you through gathering everything.
