Description
The Hugo claw cane is a derby-handled cane that stands up on its own. Its tip opens into a low claw base that re-centers itself, so the cane waits beside you instead of dropping to the floor when you let go. The maker rates it to 300 lb (136 kg).
A tip that lets the cane stand
The maker builds the claw tip to re-center itself for stability, and says it is 57 per cent lighter than its QuadPod tip. The same tip takes the Hugo Ice-O-Grip accessory, sold separately, for winter ground.
If you only need a cane to lean on and not one that stands, the maker's plain and folding canes weigh less. Our walking aids pages list the rest of the range.
The handle and the height
The derby handle spreads the weight across the palm, and its cushioned grip is one the maker says helps absorb shocks and suits people with arthritis. The shaft adjusts through 12 push-button settings, and the maker says the cane fits most people between 5 ft 0 in and 6 ft 5 in.
Drive publishes no inch range for those settings, so we set the height with you rather than guess over the phone. Hold it in the hand opposite the side that needs support.
Finish and what is included
This one is the Rosebud finish: a rose-patterned shaft with a pink grip, as the maker lists it. One cane arrives with a strap that carries a reflective patch, so it is easier to see after dark.

Frequently asked questions
Can I let go of the cane and have it stay upright?
Yes. The maker designs the claw tip to re-center itself and says it allows the cane to stand on its own. On soft or uneven ground, settle it before you trust it.
Is the claw tip the same as an Airgo MiniQuad tip?
No. This is Hugo's claw tip, which the maker says is 57 per cent lighter than its QuadPod tip. The Airgo MiniQuad tip is a separate product.
Is it only sold in the rose pattern?
Rosebud, the rose-patterned shaft with a pink grip that the maker lists for item 731-459. Tell us if you would rather have a plain colour and we will check what Drive holds.
Will it fit my height?
The shaft has 12 push-button settings, and the maker says the cane fits most people from 5 ft 0 in to 6 ft 5 in. We set the height with you when you collect it or when we deliver.
How much does it weigh, and what is the warranty?
Drive publishes no weight for the cane, and its US page states no warranty term for this model. We will not quote figures the maker does not give: ask us and we put the question to Drive in writing.
