Switch-It Switched Head Arrays for Power Chairs

A rider who cannot use the hands can still drive with the head. The Switch-It switched head array reads the head as it comes near each sensor, with no pressure needed at all, and the chair moves.

  • Sensing: zero-touch proximity sensors built for power wheelchair use, less susceptible to interference from the electromagnetic fields a power chair generates
  • How many sensors: three or four proximity sensors in one array
  • Activation: no force required at all, an activation surface of 2" x 1" (50 x 25 mm) and a sensing distance of 10 mm
  • Back pad: 5" x 5" (127 x 127 mm)
  • Lateral pads: short straight 4" x 5.25" (102 x 133 mm), short or long curved 4" x 5" (102 x 127 mm) and long straight 4" x 6.25" (102 x 159 mm), the four shapes the maker offers
  • Dip switch panel: inside the back pad, so each sensor can be turned on or off, which the maker suggests while a rider is learning the array
  • Monojack ports: the three and four sensor arrays carry 1/8" (3 mm) ports, so a mechanical switch can take the fourth and fifth functions
  • Mode switches: an Egg Switch, MicroLite or Piko on a 12" swing away rod, a fibre optic switch in a gooseneck, or a proximity Flex Switch
  • Compatibility: Penny and Giles R-Net with the Omni, Quantum Q-Logic and Curtis Enable 50 with the Enhanced Display, and Dynamic Controls DX2 with the Switch-It DX dongle; the fit depends on your chair's electronics, so we confirm it with Sunrise Medical before you order
  • Mounting: headrest mounting hardware is included, in 1/2" square with a 1" ball or Whitmyer (Axys) with a 3/4" ball
  • Item numbers: HDR3-SS-M2-WH-AXYS, HDR3-LC-M2-WH-AXYS and HDR4-LS-M1L-WH-AXYS are three of the packages
Warranty
Twelve months on the electronic components and the mounting hardware, and three months on wearable items such as pads

What is included?

The head array with its back pad and lateral pads, and the headrest mounting hardware. The wing shape, the mount and any mode switch are separate item numbers chosen when the order is placed, so ask us for a quote.

Description

The Switch-It switched head array lets a rider drive with the head alone. Each sensor reads the head as it comes close, so there is no pressure to apply and no switch to press.

Who are the switched head arrays for?

They suit a rider with head control and little use of the hands, set so the head only has to come near a sensor. Book a free home assessment or visit our showroom and we will set one up with you.

How many sensors and which wings?

The maker builds the array with three or four proximity sensors. Lateral pads come in four shapes: short or long, and straight or curved.

How is it set up?

A panel of dip switches sits inside the back pad and turns each sensor on or off. The maker suggests using it while a rider is learning, so one sensor at a time can be brought in. The three and four sensor arrays also carry 1/8" monojack ports for a mechanical switch.

Will it fit my power chair?

It needs a chair that takes an alternative drive control. The maker lists Penny and Giles R-Net with the Omni, Quantum Q-Logic and Curtis Enable 50 with the Enhanced Display, and Dynamic Controls DX2 with the Switch-It DX dongle. We confirm your chair's electronics with Sunrise Medical before ordering. Headrest hardware is included.

Funding help for a head array in Ontario

Depending on the person's needs and assessment, funding may be available for mobility equipment in Ontario. Our team works with funding programs every week and can point you to the right route before you buy. See our funding guide or call (905) 798-1853.

Delivery, service and warranty

We fit the array and set the sensors with the rider. The maker's manual prints twelve months on the electronic components and the mounting hardware, and three months on wearable items such as pads. The paperwork sits on our documents page.

How does it compare?

See our wheelchair accessories for mode switches, and our power wheelchairs for the chair itself.

Frequently asked questions

Does the head have to touch a pad?

No. The sensors work on proximity, so the head only has to come within about 10 mm.

Can the array run more functions than its sensor count?

Yes. The maker's three switch array carries two 1/8" monojack ports, so a mechanical mode switch adds a fourth and fifth function.

Can a mode switch go on the array?

Yes. An Egg Switch, MicroLite or Piko on a 12" swing away rod, or a fibre optic switch in a gooseneck.
