Description
The ZIPPIE X'CAPE is a folding paediatric wheelchair from Sunrise Medical, model EIFZ1, with an XLOCK crossbrace.
Who should use a ZIPPIE X'CAPE, and who should pick another chair?
It suits an active, growing child who needs a chair that folds for a car and still locks open.
The crossbrace has 2 inches of width growth. The seat rail has 3 inches of depth growth.
Pick the ZIPPIE Zone for a rigid frame and the lightest listed weight. Pick the ZIPPIE IRIS if the child needs tilt.
How do I check the fit?
Sunrise does not publish a measuring method, and it does not give an inch allowance.
Measure seated hip width, the hip to the back of the knee, and the seat-to-floor height.
Seat width is 8 to 16 inches and grows to 18. Seat depth is 8 to 18 inches and grows to 20.
Front seat-to-floor is 13 to 18 inches. Rear seat-to-floor is 11 to 18 inches. A free home assessment can take those measurements.
How does it fold, and what does it weigh?
Push to lock the XLOCK crossbrace. Pull to fold it. The maker says one hand can do either step.
The May 2025 reference guide lists 19 lbs (8.6 kg) without footrests. The page lists 19 lbs and does not name the parts.
The May 2024 brochure says folded width starts at 5 inches without the wheels, hangers and footplates.
The 50 lb figure is an average shipping weight, not the chair. The rider limit is 165 lbs (75 kg).
Which options are chosen on the order form?
You choose a swing-in or fixed front, Z-finity footplate angle, casters from 3 to 6 inches, and rear wheels of 12, 16, 20, 22 or 24 inches.
How does the X'CAPE compare with two other chairs?
The ZIPPIE GS is the chair if you may want a rigid frame or wheels at the front.
The Zone does not fold. See paediatric wheelchairs and folding wheelchairs.
Frequently asked questions
Does the X'CAPE lock like a rigid frame?
The XLOCK crossbrace locks when the chair is open. A pull on the strap folds it again.
Is every X'CAPE transit equipped?
No. The order form has a transit-included base and a transit-optional base. The supplement lists the X'CAPE at 165 lbs (75 kg).
How far does the footplate move?
Z-finity sets the footplate from half an inch above the seat pan to 21 inches below it, at any angle.
