Description
The ZIPPIE Zone is a rigid paediatric wheelchair from Sunrise Medical, model EIRZ1.
Who should use a ZIPPIE Zone, and who should pick another chair?
It suits an active child or teen who wants a light rigid frame.
The back sits inboard, the footrest flips up, and a hub lock sits on the seat rail.
Pick the ZIPPIE GS for a folding frame or wheels that can sit at the front.
Pick the ZIPPIE IRIS if the child needs tilt. The Zone page does not list a tilt range.
How do I check the fit?
Sunrise does not publish a measuring method, and it does not give an inch allowance.
Measure seated hip width, the hip to the back of the knee, and the seat-to-floor height.
Seat width is 8 to 16 inches. Seat depth is 8 to 18 inches, with 3 inches of frame growth and 2 inches more in the sling.
Width does not grow in the frame. A wider seat means replacing parts. Front seat-to-floor is 14 to 19 inches, and the rear is 13 to 19.
A free home assessment can take those measurements.
How does it come apart, and what does it weigh?
The rigid 7000 series aluminium frame does not fold. Quick-release axles let the rear wheels come off.
The page and the May 2025 reference guide both list 14 lbs (6.4 kg). Parts are not listed, and the figure varies.
The limit is 165 lbs (75 kg): the rider plus items carried. The 50 lb figure is shipping weight, not the chair.
Which options are chosen on the order form?
Camber is 0, 3 or 6 degrees. Casters are 3 to 6 inches. Rear wheels are 20, 22 or 24 inches. Transit is optional.
How does the Zone compare with two other chairs?
The ZIPPIE X'CAPE folds for a car. The GS adds a folding frame and reverse wheels.
See paediatric wheelchairs and rigid wheelchairs.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Zone fold for a car?
No. The frame is rigid. The rear wheels use quick-release axles so they can come off for a lift.
Can the child stay in the chair in a vehicle?
Only with the transit option. Without it, the manual says to move the rider to a vehicle seat.
Is the 14 lb figure the whole chair?
The maker prints 14 lbs and does not list the parts included. It is not the 50 lb shipping weight.
