Description
Some children hold the same posture for years, and others need the laterals moved every few months. The PXAL is for the second case: its laterals are separate parts, so their position changes without a new back.
Who is the adjustable lateral back for?
- A child whose posture needs support at the trunk, at the hips, or both.
- A family that wants one back to last through growth.
- Where the shell shape alone should set the laterals, the posterior lateral back is the simpler choice.
How do the laterals attach?
- The shell has its own lateral adjustment slots, separate from the slot the back hardware sits in, so the two do not interfere.
- Laterals can be mounted at the trunk or at the hips, whichever the therapist wants.
- Mounting is fixed or swing-away, chosen when the back is ordered.
- The pads are interchangeable.
What grows with the child?
- Laterals move up, down and in and out on their slots, so their position is re-set as the torso changes.
- Ki lists two angle settings, 2 in or 4 in (5.1 or 10.2 cm), for the recline the therapist chooses.
- The shell fits chair widths within 1 in, which helps when the wheelchair itself is replaced.
- For contour wings that hug a small torso, the PXALCL uses this same shell.
How is the back held on?
Dex-4-Kids hardware comes with the back. Its lockout latch stops the back folding while the chair is moving, and Ki asks that you pull up on the handle and listen for the click before each trip.
The cover is breathable, wipeable and removable for washing. Ki warrants the shell and foam for 24 months and the covers for 6.
What happens at the fitting?
- An occupational therapist sets the lateral height, width and angle with the child in the chair.
- We order that build and fit it at home: book a free home assessment.
- Cushions are under wheelchair cushions, the range under backrests, and chairs under paediatrics.

Frequently asked questions
Can one back last through growth?
That is what this model is for. The shell adjusts 3.3 in in height and 1 in in width, and the laterals move on their own slots.
Can the shell be ordered on its own?
Yes. Ki builds it with no laterals at all, or with laterals set at the trunk or at the hips, in a fixed or a swing-away mount.
How is this different from the PXPL?
On the PXPL the laterals are formed into the aluminium shell, so they stay where the shell puts them. The PXAL has separate hardware and swappable pads.
