Description
A narrow torso needs the lateral support close in, and it also changes shape as the child grows. The PXALCL answers both: wings that wrap the trunk, on a shell that keeps adjusting.
Who is the contour lateral back for?
- A child with a small trunk who needs lateral support that follows the body shape rather than sitting square to it.
- A rider whose lateral support has to move with growth rather than be replaced.
- Where flat pads are wanted instead, the adjustable lateral back uses the same shell.
What are contour laterals?
- They are shaped wings rather than flat pads, so they wrap a small torso instead of standing off it.
- Each wing adjusts in width and height, so the support is placed where the therapist wants it.
- Ki makes them only for the Axiom for Kids line. No other Axiom back offers them.
What does the shell give you?
- 3.3 in (8.4 cm) of height and 1 in (2.5 cm) of width adjustment, for growth and for fine setting.
- Two angle settings, 2 in or 4 in (5.1 or 10.2 cm).
- A shell that fits chair widths within 1 in, so the back can outlast the wheelchair.
How is the back held on?
Dex-4-Kids hardware comes with the back, and its lockout latch stops the back folding while the chair is moving. It clicks when locked, and Ki asks that you pull up on the handle and listen for the click before each trip.
The cover lifts off for washing. Ki warrants the shell and foam for 24 months and the covers for 6.
What happens at the fitting?
- An occupational therapist sets the wings and the shell angle with the child sitting in the chair.
- We order that build and fit it at home: book a free home assessment.
- More seating under backrests and wheelchair cushions; chairs under paediatrics.

Frequently asked questions
What is the smallest child this back suits?
The range starts at 10 x 10 in, the smallest back Ki builds for this line. Your therapist decides whether a smaller rider is ready for a back of this type.
Can the wings be moved as my child grows?
Yes. Each wing adjusts in width and height, and the shell underneath adds 3.3 in of height adjustment of its own.
Is this the same back as the PXAL?
The shell is the same. The difference is the laterals: the PXAL takes flat pads, and the PXALCL takes the contoured wings that only this line offers.
