Frequently asked questions

What bathroom safety equipment do seniors need?

Essential bathroom safety equipment includes grab bars, raised toilet seats, shower chairs or benches, non-slip mats, and handheld showerheads. For those with limited mobility, consider a bath lift, roll-in shower, or commode chair.

Does ADP cover bathroom safety equipment?

Funding depends on the device and your situation. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first. Home changes such as grab bars may be covered for eligible people through March of Dimes' Home and Vehicle Modification Program, and some people have coverage through WSIB, Veterans Affairs or private insurance.

How much does bathroom modification cost in Toronto?

Basic bathroom safety upgrades (grab bars, shower seat, raised toilet seat) cost $500-$1,500. Walk-in shower conversions cost $5,000-$15,000. Full accessible bathroom renovations cost $15,000-$30,000. Funding may be available through HVMP and municipal grants.

What is a bath lift and how does it work?

A bath lift is a motorized seat that lowers you into the tub and raises you back up. You sit on the seat, press a button to lower into the water, bathe, then press to rise. Battery-powered and portable - no installation needed.

Where can I buy bathroom safety equipment in Toronto?

Mobility Specialties sells bathroom safety equipment throughout Toronto and the GTA. We carry grab bars, shower chairs, bath benches, raised toilet seats, commodes, bath lifts, and transfer benches. Visit our Etobicoke or Brampton showroom or call for delivery. Professional grab bar installation available.

What bathroom safety equipment do seniors need most?

The most essential bathroom safety equipment for seniors includes: grab bars near toilet and shower, non-slip bath mat, shower chair or bench, raised toilet seat, and handheld showerhead. These prevent the majority of bathroom falls, which are the leading cause of injury for seniors at home.

How much does a walk-in bathtub cost in Canada?

Walk-in bathtubs in Canada cost $5,000-$15,000+ installed. Basic walk-in tubs start around $5,000. Tubs with hydrotherapy jets cost $8,000-$12,000. Wheelchair accessible roll-in showers cost $10,000-$20,000. Funding may be available through March of Dimes HVMP and municipal accessibility grants.

Does ADP cover shower chairs and commodes?

Some people have coverage through WSIB, Veterans Affairs or private insurance, and home changes such as grab bars may be covered for eligible people through March of Dimes' Home and Vehicle Modification Program.

Is there an income limit for ADP?

No. ADP has no income test: Ontario residents with a valid health card and a qualifying long-term physical disability may be eligible. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first.

How often can I get new equipment through ADP?

ADP sets a usage period for each device type; for example, a wheelchair is usually replaced no sooner than every five years. After the usage period you may qualify for a replacement if you still need the device, and sooner if your needs change significantly.

Can I upgrade my ADP equipment?

Yes. You can choose features beyond what ADP approves and pay the difference. You pay your share plus the cost of any upgrades, and we show you both before anything is ordered.

What documents do I need for ADP application?

You need a valid Ontario health card and an assessment by an ADP authorizer (usually an occupational or physical therapist). The application has sections for you, for the authorizer and for us as the ADP registered vendor; your authorizer will tell you if a physician also needs to sign. We guide you through gathering everything.
