Description

The Invacare Matrx MX2 carbon fibre back, model SE0001463, is a 16 in high shell for active wheelchair users.

What does it do and how does it work?

  • Carbon shell: the fibres are oriented to give flex and suspension, with cutouts for breathability and slots for height adjustment.
  • Contour: a 3 in (76 mm) contour depth shapes the shell to the back for positioning.
  • Cover: breathable Spacetex, with leatherette side panels at this height, over a sacral and lumbar positioning pad that comes with the back.
  • Light: the shell and hardware weigh from 1.5 lb (0.7 kg).

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

  • Active users: people who need a light rigid back with precise positioning.
  • 16 in height: the tallest MX2; the 6, 9 and 12 in backs are separate models.
  • Tilt-only or tilt/recline chairs: the Matrx Elite TR is the model made for those chairs.
  • Assessment first: an occupational therapist or physiotherapist sets the back height and angle.

Will it fit?

  • Widths: 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 in, all at 16 in high, with a 3 in contour.
  • Chair width: the hardware fits a chair 1 in wider or narrower than the back.
  • Back canes: the cane clamps fit 1 in (25 mm), 7/8 in (22 mm) and 3/4 in (19 mm) posts, and must not be used outside that range.
  • Height: the 16 in shell adjusts 3.5 in (89 mm) on its slots.
  • Narrow chairs: depth and angle travel are limited when the chair is narrower than the back.

Using it day to day

  • Fixed mount: a carbon fibre plate with 2 in of depth travel and a 30 degree angle range.
  • Quick release: 4 in of depth travel, plus or minus 15 degrees, and the back lifts off for transport.
  • Adjustments: both mounts set height, depth, angle and rotation.
  • Care: remove the inner foam, machine wash the cover at 60 C (140 F) on a delicate cycle, then hang it to drip dry or tumble it on low for no more than 10 minutes at 40 C (104 F).
  • Cleaners: no bleach, phenols or alcohols, and no dry cleaning.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

  • Capacity: 250 lb (113 kg).
  • Mount on the order: fixed and quick release are different maker numbers, so name the mount when you order.
  • Warranty: 2 years limited, excluding punctures, tears, burns and the removable cover.

Which version should I choose?

  • Width: 14 to 18 in.
  • Mount: fixed carbon plate or quick release.

How does it compare?

The Matrx Elite TR is the Matrx back for tilt-only or tilt/recline chairs. The Phantom back is another rigid back. See all wheelchair backrests.
