Gel-80 adds gel bladders and foam on top of a mattress you already have. It does not replace that mattress.
Who is it for?
- Span describes it as a gel and foam overlay for people with skin at risk, used on a hospital-size twin.
- A nurse or therapist decides if an overlay is enough, or if the person needs a full therapy mattress.
- It is the wrong product over 300 lbs (136 kg), and the wrong product if you need powered air.
Will it fit?
- The overlay is 78 in long and 34 in wide. Span says that covers a hospital twin of about 80 by 35 in.
- Thickness is 3.5 in. That height stacks on the mattress. Check rail gaps after it is strapped down. Health Canada warns that extra height changes those gaps. See bed rails.
- Elastic corners hold it to the mattress. It is one piece. No assembly of cells.
- It is heavy for an overlay: 46 lbs (21 kg). Plan the lift onto the bed.
Care
- Span's brochure: wipe-clean, fluid-impervious top. Gel is an aqueous non-toxic fill inside the bladders.
- Do not cut a bladder. Ask us about this overlay before you send one back. See our return policy.
- This is not a full mattress. If the mattress under it is worn out, replace that too.

Does Gel-80 need a pump?
No. It is a gel and foam overlay. Nothing plugs in.
Why is the overlay shorter than 80 in?
Span prints the overlay as 78 by 34 in, for use on an 80 by 35 in mattress. The straps, not a longer foam slab, locate it.
Can it go on a queen bed?
Span specifies a hospital-size twin. A queen is wider than 34 in of overlay. Do not stretch it across a queen.
