Description
The Span-America Geo-Wave is a full length foam cushion that pads a high backed chair from the seat to the headrest. Its maker cuts the top into segmented fins set in three zoned orientations, a design Span-America builds for the shearing that reclining causes in institutional seating. It is also thicker at the lumbar area and under the thighs.
Who it suits
- People who spend long periods in a geri-chair, recliner or another high backed institutional chair.
- Anyone who slides forward when the chair is reclined: the thicker lumbar and thigh areas counter that.
- Chairs up to 300 lbs (136 kg), or 500 lbs (227 kg) on the 28 in version.
Will it fit your chair?
- This cushion is 68 in (173 cm) long, so it suits a full length high backed chair, not a wheelchair seat.
- Pick the width to match the chair: 18 in, 22 in or 28 in, all 68 in long. Each maker item number is in the specs.
- Elastic straps at the head, the torso and the foot hold it to the chair. Check they reach your chair's frame.
Living with it
- The cover wipes clean and has a non-skid backing, so it stays put on the chair.
- Under the fins it is a foam cushion. There is no gel and no air, so it needs no pump and nothing to refill.
- The maker also sells a shorter 34 in version, the Short-Wave, for wheelchair seats.

Frequently asked questions
What are the fins for?
The maker cuts the surface into fins set in three zoned orientations, to reduce the shearing that reclining causes.
Which kind of chair does it go on?
A high backed one. It is 68 in long and pads the whole chair, not a wheelchair seat. The Short-Wave is the wheelchair version.
How does it attach to the chair?
It fastens with elastic straps: one at the head, one behind the torso and one at the foot.
Does anything need to be pumped or refilled?
No. It is foam with no gel or air, so there is nothing to pump or refill.
