Description
The Spex High Contour wheelchair cushion creates what the maker calls an optimum pelvic foundation for a person who needs extra pelvic and hip immersion. It adds thigh and abductor support for levelling the pelvis, and its strategic positioning base is adjusted on the spot.
Configuring the base
The base is adapted for pelvic obliquity, tight hamstrings, posterior or anterior pelvic tilt, limited hip flexion on one side or both, extensor thrust and pelvic rotation. Cells and pads are added and removed to suit the posture, wedging the cushion to slope to the front or building it up under the thighs.
Size and weight limits
The maker sells 24 standard sizes, in seat widths of 10 to 20 in and lengths of 10 to 22 in, one item code each, and quotes made to measure widths up to 25 in. The trough is 2 in and the cushion 2 to 3 in high.
Widths of 10 to 15 in carry 200 lbs (90 kg) and widths of 16 to 20 in carry 300 lbs (136 kg). The 2018 manual prints 350 lbs (160 kg) for the wider sizes, which we confirm with Spex on the quote.
Pressure and covers
A gel-foam ischial well spreads load under the pelvis, the 16 in and wider sizes add a coccyx channel, and the maker's laboratory readings across the five zones showed smooth transitions without significant peaks.
A wipe-down Spextex incontinence cover sits under a washable breathable spacer cover. The outer cover washes at 40 C and drip or tumble dries on low; the inner cover is hand wash only and the foam is kept dry.
The expected cushion life is five years, and the 24 month warranty covers the covers, foam unit and base, excluding wear, tears, punctures and abuse.
