Spex Classic Standard Contour cushion, gel foam ischial well

The Spex Classic Standard Contour is a wheelchair seat cushion on an adjustable positioning base. The maker builds it for people with moderate to severe positioning and pressure needs, and contours the shape by placing pads in the base cell system under the foam. Spex fits a gel foam ischial well and adds a coccyx channel on sizes 16 in and wider. An occupational therapist or physiotherapist sets the contouring in a seating assessment.

Description

The Spex Classic Standard Contour is a wheelchair seat cushion on an adjustable positioning base. Spex builds it for people with moderate to severe positioning and pressure needs, and contours the shape by placing pads in the base cell system, under the foam layers, so the top surface does not bottom out.

The cushion carries a gel foam ischial well and, from 16 in wide, a coccyx channel. An occupational therapist or physiotherapist sets the contouring in a seating assessment. The foam cushion range has the other Spex shapes.

Who is it for?

Spex aims it at users with changing postural needs, postures that need correction or control, and tight hamstrings. It is the standard depth version of the range, with High Contour and SuperHigh Contour for deeper shaping.

Which size fits the chair?

Width bands are 8-10 in at 2 in high, 11-15 in at 2.5 in, 16-17 in at 2.75 in and 18-20 in at 3 in. Depths run from 8-9 in to 21-24 in, and the deeper cushions carry more contouring: 2 rows of thigh pads at 8-9 in deep, up to 6 rows at 21-24 in.

Non-standard and custom sizes are made on request, so send us the seat measurements.

How is it built?

The base holds contouring pads and removable trochanter supports for obliquity or hip flexion, with a 30 mm trough height. The ischial well insert can be half inch gel foam, 1 in soft gel foam or Supracor. Spex says the well spreads pressure under the pelvis and reduces shear in sensitive areas.

Covers, care and returns

The cushion comes with a washable spacer outer cover and an inner incontinence cover, and spare covers come in nine colours. Spex prints no washing temperature or drying instruction. A used cushion, or one that has touched the skin, is not returnable. Read the return policy.

Delivery and service

We fit and set the contouring at delivery through a wheelchair configuration. Book a free home assessment if the chair should be seen at home, and our service team looks after what we sell.

Frequently asked questions

How is the contouring set?

Pads are placed in the base cell system under the foam, so the surface above them stays level.

From which width is the coccyx channel fitted?

Sizes 16 in wide and above carry the coccyx channel.

Can the cushion be made to a custom shape?

Yes. Non-standard sizes and custom ischial wells are made on request.
