Description
The Hinged Knee Wrap is for a knee that needs holding as well as bending: one that is unstable, one recovering from a ligament or meniscal injury, or a weak knee that tires through the day. Tynor lists its uses as chronic laxity or instability, patellar dislocation or stabilization, sprains and strains, and tendon or ligament injury of the knee.
The splints and the hinge
Two rigid aluminium splints run down the sides of the knee and meet at a bi-axial hinge, which is what the maker calls bilateral hinged stabilization. The maker's wording is that the design allows normal flexion and free movement, so the knee bends while the sides are held.
Wrapping it on
The wrap closes around the leg with hook-loop straps rather than pulling on over the foot, which suits a knee that is sore to move. Tynor shapes it with what the maker calls anti-tourniquet straps, so the pressure is spread rather than pinching in one band, and pads the opening over the kneecap.
Which size to order
Measure around the mid-thigh, about 15 cm (6 in) above the knee. Small fits 37 to 43 cm, Medium 43 to 49 cm, Large 49 to 55 cm and Extra large 55 to 61 cm, and the maker advises the next size up at the top of a band.
What goes with a knee brace
A hinged wrap supports the knee while it is worn. Weight-bearing aids are in the walkers and wheelchairs sections, and the rest of the room is under patient room products.
Where the knee is part of a wider mobility problem, funding may help with the cost of the equipment that goes with it, and we can assess the home before anything is chosen.
Frequently asked questions
Do the splints stop the knee from bending?
No. The maker's design is a bi-axial hinge at the knee, and Tynor states it allows normal flexion and free movement. The splints hold the sides of the joint, not the bend.
How is the wrap fastened?
It wraps around the leg and closes with hook-loop straps, so it does not have to be pulled on over the foot. That suits a knee that hurts to move.
Which size do I need?
Measure the mid-thigh, about 15 cm above the knee: Small 37 to 43 cm, Medium 43 to 49 cm, Large 49 to 55 cm and Extra large 55 to 61 cm. Above a band, the maker advises the next size up.
Is it a post-operative brace?
It is a hinged soft support, not a post-operative brace with a lock or a range-of-motion stop. What is worn after surgery is set by the surgeon.
