Description
The JAY Encompass is Sunrise Medical's fully configurable wheelchair back for aggressive positioning. Sunrise builds it as a contoured three-piece aluminium shell with swing-away lateral thoracic supports and a configurable foam insert, in widths from 14 to 25 in and heights from 12 to 28 in.
Who it is for
Sunrise describes the Encompass as lateral support for people whose posture needs the laterals to be configurable rather than fixed. The swing-away hardware moves the anterior supports aside for transfers.
How the back is built
The shell is a contoured three-piece aluminium back on four-point hardware, with 15 degrees of angle adjustment, for wheelchairs with 7/8 in or 1 in frame tubing.
The maker matches the lateral to the chair width, from small for a 14 to 16 in chair up to large for a 23 to 25 in chair.
The laterals and the foam insert
Each side takes a posterior lateral and a swing-away anterior lateral, in four sizes each. Non-standard laterals are made to a quote. The foam insert is configurable, with 1 in high-resiliency foam as standard and T-Foam, gel or Sunmate layers over a 1/2 in closed cell base.
Cover, hardware and care
The cover is a black AirExchange contact surface with a Dartex non-contact surface. Mounting is four-point, with a removable hardware set and a universal headrest adapter plate as options. Ask our service department about covers and hardware.
Ordering a back and funding it
Every Encompass is a build, so send the wheelchair's width, the back height you need and the person's torso measurements on the seating quote form. Funding may help: see who may help pay.
Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor. Made to order items are non-returnable; see the return policy. The maker publishes no warranty period for this back, so ask us and we will confirm one with Sunrise. Comparable backs are under wheelchair backrests.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the lateral size?
Match it to the chair width: small for 14 to 16 in seats up to large for 23 to 25 in.
Do the anterior laterals swing out of the way?
Yes. The swing-away hardware moves them aside so the person can transfer without removing the back.
What foam comes on this back?
1 in high-resiliency foam is standard; T-Foam, gel or Sunmate layers can be specified over a closed cell base.
Will it fit my wheelchair?
It fits 7/8 in and 1 in frame tubing with four-point mounting. Send us your chair's width and we will confirm the build.
