Description
The Ki Mobility Catalyst 4 is a folding aluminium wheelchair for an adult who self-propels and needs the chair to fold into a car. Capacity is 250 lbs (113 kg), rider and carried items together.
What does it do and how does it work?
The rear axle sits less than 1/2 in (13 mm) forward of a traditional folding-chair axle, so you sit closer to the wheel.
- The frame folds side to side on a cross brace.
- Quick-release axles, when ordered, let the rear wheels come off. Swing-away footrests lift off for a transfer.
- Rear wheels are 20, 22 or 24 in, spoke or Maxx Mag. Casters are 4-8 in. Wheel locks are push-to-lock, pull-to-lock or flush mount.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
It suits a rider at or under 250 lbs (113 kg), or 350 lbs (159 kg) on the heavy-duty option, who folds the chair into a car. A rigid chair such as the Ki Mobility Ethos does not fold. Over 350 lbs, see bariatric wheelchairs.
Will it fit?
Seat width is 14-22 in (35.6-55.9 cm). Seat depth is 14-20 in (35.6-50.8 cm). Front seat height is 13.5-21 in (34.3-53.3 cm). Rear seat height is 12.5-19 in (31.8-48.3 cm) on this Catalyst 4.
We confirm the seat size and the standard or heavy-duty frame before you order. A free home assessment measures hip width, thigh length and heel height.
Using it day to day
Standard weight is 26 lbs (11.8 kg). Transport weight is 16 lbs (7.3 kg) on a 16 by 16 frame with 5 by 1 in poly casters and height-adjustable T-arm receivers, once the footrest and rear wheels are off.
Do not climb more than one or two steps. Use anti-tips when they are fitted. Clean with mild soap.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
The 250 lb limit includes items carried on the chair. Heavy duty raises it to 350 lbs (159 kg). Only a transit build, with securement points, is for sitting in a moving vehicle.
The frame, cross braces, hangers and quick-release axles are covered for the original owner. Other parts are covered for one year. Upholstery, tires, arm pads and grips are not.
Which version should I choose?
This is the Catalyst 4. The Catalyst 4C is the same folding family with rear seat height up to 20 in (50.8 cm). Choose heavy duty only above 250 lbs. Colours are gloss, matte, or a hydrographic pattern on the frame.
How does it compare?
The Quickie 2 is another folding ultralight. The Ethos stays rigid in the car. See folding wheelchairs if this seat range does not fit.
Frequently asked questions
How heavy is it to lift into a car?
Standard weight is 26 lbs. The 16 lb figure is a 16 by 16 frame with the footrest and rear wheels removed.
Does every Catalyst 4 work as a vehicle seat?
No. Only a transit build is for occupied vehicle travel. A non-transit chair is not a vehicle seat.
What does the axle offset change?
The axle sits less than 1/2 in forward of a traditional folding axle, so the rider sits closer to the wheel.
