Description
The Maple Leaf Fusion 1 is an aluminium wheelchair back with a shallow shell and mild laterals. It comes in 16, 18 and 20 in widths at 18 in high, with a gel-infused foam top.
What does it do and how does it work?
It gives basic trunk support with less side restriction than a deep lateral back.
- Shell: lightweight aluminium, shaped with mild laterals.
- Foam: a high-resilience base under a gel-infused memory foam top.
- Cover: a breathable waterproof cover, with the Teck4 incontinence cover as an option.
- Mount: angle-adjustable hardware with 4 in (10 cm) of forward and rear movement and a 30 degree angle range.
- Clamps: fit 1 in (25 mm) back posts, with reducing sleeves for 7/8 in (22 mm) posts.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
It suits a rider who needs mild lateral support without a deep wrap.
- Choose the Prism Ultra back when the rider needs a 6 in (15 cm) lateral contour.
- Choose the Axiom PB back for a 2.25 in (5.7 cm) contour with a hardware choice.
An occupational therapist or physiotherapist sets the width, height and contour in a seating assessment.
Will it fit?
The standard back is 16, 18 or 20 in (41, 46 or 51 cm) wide at 18 in (46 cm) high.
- Width: match the chair's seat width; F1ST16, F1ST18 and F1ST20 are the item numbers.
- Height: 18 in is standard; a 16 or 20 in height is a custom build.
- Custom sizes: other widths and heights are made to order and are not returnable.
- Headrest and laterals: the shell is pre-punched for both.
Using it day to day
The back lifts off its mounting brackets with two release latches.
- Fitting: the first fitting uses a 3/16 in Allen key and a 7/16 in spanner.
- Cleaning: the cover machine washes cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, no softener or bleach, and air dries in the shade; wipe the shell with a damp cloth.
- Care: keep a cover on the back, replace a torn cover, check the hardware regularly, and replace contaminated foam.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
It is a positioning back, and the cover does two jobs.
- Cover: it protects the foam from incontinence and is fire retardant, so the back is not used without it.
- Stability: a back changes the chair's centre of gravity, so check the chair for tipping before use.
- Returns: a custom width or height is not returnable; the standard sizes follow the return policy.
- Warranty: 2 years on the back, hardware and cover.
How does it compare?
- The Prism Ultra back has a 6 in (15 cm) lateral contour and a 250 lb (113 kg) capacity.
- The Axiom PB back has a shallower 2.25 in (5.7 cm) contour and fits frames 12 to 22 in wide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order a 16 in or 20 in height?
Only as a custom build. The standard Fusion 1 is 18 in high, and a custom height is quoted before the order.
Can I add a headrest?
Yes. The shell is pre-punched for a headrest plate, and the headrest and its mounting hardware are separate items.
Is a custom size returnable?
No. A custom width or height is made for the rider and cannot be returned; the standard 16, 18 and 20 in backs can.
