Description
Side sleeping leaves a gap between the shoulder and the ear, and the Somnia pillow from Orthex is shaped to fill it: a space for the shoulder, a firmer section under the head and a raised neck edge, in two heights. Browse our foam cushions and wheelchair cushions for the rest of the range.
What is it for?
- Orthex describes the Somnia as an ergonomic side sleeper pillow, with reinforced head support built for the alignment a side sleeping position needs.
- Its shoulder relief zone accommodates the shoulder, which the maker says aligns the upper body and takes pressure off the joints.
Which height do I need?
- Both builds are 22 in long and 14 in wide; the difference is the height, 4.5 in or 5.5 in.
- Line the highest side up with the neck: that section is thicker and more flexible, while the head section carries a high density reinforcement.
- The maker publishes no shoulder width rule for the two builds, so tell us your shoulder width and how you sleep and we will help you choose.
What is inside it?
- Two foams from the maker's Certi-PUR certified range: a gel infused viscoelastic memory foam over a high density memory foam core.
- A knitted cover of coconut fibre and polyester that the maker calls breathable and that washes in cold water; it is sold with the pillow and on its own.
- Orthex says the typical adaptation period is two to three weeks.
- Care: the foam wipes clean with a damp cloth only; wash the cover in cold water, lay it flat to dry, and skip bleach and ironing.
How does it compare?
The Somnia 03 is the lower build in the same family, made for back sleeping, and the Symbia back wedges hold the upper body up for sitting in bed.
Frequently asked questions
Should I take the 4.5 in or the 5.5 in pillow?
Both are 22 in by 14 in and shaped for side sleeping; the 5.5 in build stands an inch taller, so it fills a wider gap. The maker gives no shoulder width rule for the two builds, so tell us your shoulder width and how you sleep and we will help you choose.
Can I use it if I sometimes sleep on my back?
The maker says the shape favours side sleeping but that it may be used in another position if you are comfortable. The Somnia 03 is the build made for back sleeping.
Can I wash the pillow?
The cover is machine washable in cold water, laid flat to dry, with no bleach and no ironing. The foam is wiped with a damp cloth only.
