Description
The Orthex Symbia 14 is the compact wedge of the maker's Symbia family. Orthex describes it as an ergonomic shoulder wedge: fourteen degrees of incline that the upper back rests back against, 22 in long, 20 in wide and 5.5 in high.
It is one of the Orthex posture cushions. Browse our foam cushions and wheelchair cushions for the rest of the range.
What is it for?
- Orthex names the supported regions as the shoulders and the head, and shapes the wedge to be rested back against rather than sat on or strapped in place.
- It is the gentlest incline of the maker's four bed wedges, for a slight upper body lift rather than a half sitting position.
- The footprint is 22 in by 20 in and the wedge stands 5.5 in high.
How do you place it?
- The maker's instruction: align the wedge with the upper back from the shoulder blades up, so the upper back is adequately supported.
- The maker adds that a pillow can go under the head and neck if support there is wanted.
- The maker says the duration of use varies with individual needs, and that the typical adaptation period is two to three weeks.
What is inside it?
- A gel infused viscoelastic memory foam comfort layer over a high density polyurethane foam support structure, both from the maker's Certi-PUR certified range.
- A breathable knitted cover of coconut fibre and polyester that washes in cold water; replacement covers come from your retailer.
- Care: the foam wipes clean with a damp cloth only; the cover dries flat, with no bleach and no ironing.
How does it compare?
The Symbia back wedges are the steeper 16, 23 and 30 degree builds for sitting up, and the Somnia 03 pillow supports the neck for back sleeping.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the shoulder wedge sit?
Against the upper back, lined up from the shoulder blades up, which is the maker's own instruction for it. It is 22 in long and 20 in wide, so it reaches across the shoulders.
Do I need a pillow with it?
Not necessarily. The maker suggests a pillow under the head and neck if support there is wanted, and says the duration of use varies according to individual needs.
Can I wash the cover?
Yes: cold water, laid flat to dry, no bleach and no ironing. The foam itself is wiped with a damp cloth only, never soaked.
