Description
The PressureGuard Protocol is Span-America's air-and-foam mattress, with a coverlet that moves moisture vapour off the skin.
Who should choose the Protocol?
- It suits someone within 400 lbs (181 kg) who needs airflow under the cover, not a foam-only pad.
- Choose the Gravity 7 if there is no outlet, or no one to run a control unit.
- The nurse or therapist decides if it matches the person's skin. Span prints no stage range for the Protocol.
Which size fits the bed?
- Widths here are 35" (89 cm) and 42" (107 cm). Lengths are 75" (191 cm), 80" (203 cm) or 84" (213 cm). Height is 7" (18 cm).
- Measure the deck first.
- Each length and width is its own item number. The current page rates the 35" and 42" widths at 400 lbs (181 kg).
- Test the mattress with the rails. Health Canada flags gaps over 120 mm (4 3/4 in) in zones 1 to 3, and over 60 mm (2 3/8 in) in zone 4. See hospital beds.
How do you use it, and what are the limits?
- Pick alternating pressure or powered float. Auto Firm firms the surface, then Span says it returns to the chosen mode after 20 minutes.
- Span says it can stay inflated in a power outage or while the bed is moved. The page does not say for how long.
- Wipe the coverlet, or unzip it for a machine wash and air dry.
- Span says the Safety Edge helps reduce fall and entrapment risk. It is not a bed rail.
- At 7" it sits higher than a 5" foam mattress. Recheck rail height above the cover.
How does it compare?
- The Med Aire Plus is a different maker's alternating system.
- The Gravity 7 is foam only: no pump and no power cord.
- Other air-and-foam styles are on hybrid mattresses.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Protocol go flat when it is unplugged?
Span says it can hold inflation in an outage or during transport. The page gives no time limit, so we confirm that for your size.
Is the raised side edge included?
No. Raised-perimeter codes are separate. The five sizes here are the flat 7" models.
Can the coverlet go in the washing machine?
Yes. Span says it is zippered and machine launderable, then air dried. Day to day, wipe it clean.
Funding may help: see who may help pay. After skin contact it cannot come back. See our return policy.
Span lists 3 years on the core, 2 years on the coverlet and 18 months on the control unit. See warranty service.
