Selan+ AF is a moisture barrier cream with an antifungal in it. SPAN-America makes it for skin that is infected and wet at the same time, which is common in long-term care.
Who it suits, and who should choose something else
- Someone treating athlete's foot, ringworm, jock itch or a superficial yeast infection.
- Someone whose skin is also exposed to urine, perspiration or heat, where a plain barrier cream gets rubbed away.
- Skin that is broken, blistered or spreading needs a clinician's look before any cream goes on.
- Anyone who reacts to miconazole or to another ingredient on the tube should use a different product.
What the maker states it does
The maker's guide lists the use as treating superficial yeast infections (candidiasis), athlete's foot (tinea pedis), ringworm (tinea corporis) and most jock itch (tinea cruris), and relieving the itching, burning and redness that go with them.
The tube prints 2% miconazole nitrate. Zinc oxide and dimethicone seal out wetness. The cream is petrolatum-free, so the maker says it will not clog diaper pores or impede diaper absorption.
How it is applied
Clean the skin with a pH neutral soap and dry it with a soft cotton towel. Massage the cream into the areas of infection until it disappears, then reapply at least once every 8 hours, or sooner if the symptoms are not relieved. Those are the maker's directions.
