Description
Selan+ Zinc Oxide is the plain barrier in the Selan+ skin care range: a cream that keeps wetness off the skin while it conditions it. This page covers the maker's 4 oz tube, PJSZC04012.
Who it suits, and who should choose something else
- Anyone whose skin stays wet from urine, stool, perspiration or heat.
- Care staff who want a cream that soaks in without grease on the skin or a liner.
- Broken, blistered or spreading skin needs a clinician's look before any cream goes on.
- Where a rash has a fungal pattern, the maker's Selan+ AF antifungal cream adds an antifungal.
What the maker states it does
The maker's sheet covers diaper rash and excoriations, and stage one pressure ulcers caused by incontinence, heat or perspiration. The product page adds moisture-related rashes and the itch of end-stage renal disease.
The barrier is zinc oxide with dimethicone and no petrolatum, so the maker states it will not clog a disposable brief or liner or work against its absorption.
What is in it
Purified water USP, cetyl alcohol, sorbitol USP, dimethicone, glycerol monostearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, lanolin USP, methylparaben, fragrance and quaternium-15.
How it is applied
The maker's guide says to clean the skin with a pH neutral soap, dry it with a soft towel, then massage the cream in until it disappears. Repeat at each diaper change.
It adds a caution: a stage one pressure ulcer can point to damage underneath, and working the tissue over the bone makes it worse.
