Description
The SPAN Topper sits on a mattress you already own. Span uses it to move moisture vapour off the skin, not to replace the surface underneath.
Who is the Topper for, and who should skip it?
- Span says it aids prevention and treatment of skin breakdown through stage IV by cutting heat and moisture, on a pressure-redistributing mattress. The care team still chooses the surface.
- It is the wrong buy if the mattress itself is collapsed. Look at a replacement such as the Gravity 7.
- It is not a bed rail and it does not turn the person.
Will it fit the mattress you have?
- Span's current codes are 80" or 84" long, and 36", 42" or 48" wide. Match the mattress, not the bed frame's outside measure.
- Fitted corners and a strap hold it on. It is a low coverlet, but any added height can change the gap at the rails. Recheck those gaps. See hospital beds.
- This page is those six sizes only. A wider coverlet is not on the current list.
- Span's current page does not print a weight limit for the Topper. The limit of the mattress underneath still applies. We confirm a Topper rating before you order.
How do you use it, and how do you clean it?
- Air flows under a vapour-permeable top. Span says the path stays open even at the sacrum.
- The control unit hangs at the footboard. Span calls it quiet, and publishes no decibel figure.
- Wipe it clean. The top layer unzips for a machine wash and air dry. The inner air layer wipes only.
- Span says there are no disposable parts to reorder.
What should you compare?
- The Premium Guard gel overlay is a gel pad with no power cord.
- The PressureGuard Protocol is a full powered mattress, not a cover you add.
- Other surfaces are on medical mattresses.
Frequently asked questions
Can this coverlet be used on its own?
No. It straps over a mattress you already have. If that mattress is worn out, you need a replacement, not only a coverlet.
Will it fit a 54 inch or 60 inch mattress?
No. The current list stops at 48 inches wide.
What if the power fails?
Span does not say the Topper holds airflow without power. The mattress underneath is what still supports the person.
Funding may help: see who may help pay. After skin contact it cannot come back. See our return policy.
Span lists 2 years on the core, the coverlet and the control unit. See warranty service.
