Description
The Spex Wonderseat is a seating system for a child's wheelchair, built by Spex as one set of parts: back support, head support, harness and seat base, set up as a unit.
Who it suits, and who should choose something else
- A child with postural needs whose therapist has asked for fitted wheelchair seating.
- Families who need the seat to change as the child grows.
- Children who travel in a vehicle while seated in their wheelchair.
- Spex does not recommend the Bounce model for a child who self-propels.
Two models, two sizes
Bounce gives moderate to low postural support for a child who transfers in and out of the chair with help. Space gives moderate to high support, for a child with little or no sitting control who uses a tilt-in-space wheelchair.
Both come in Size 0, about 6 months to 5 years old, and Size 1, about 4 to 10 years old, on seat bases of 10 in x 12 in and 12 in x 16 in.
Weight and fit
Maximum user weight is 47 kg (104 lb), and seat depth adjusts from 15 to 28 cm on Size 0 and 23 to 38 cm on Size 1. It fits wheelchair canes of 19 mm to 30 mm; chairs without canes do not suit it.
Travelling in a vehicle
Spex crash tested the system to RESNA WC-4:2012 Section 20 (WC20), so it can be used as a vehicle seat on a suitable wheelchair base, though transferring to the vehicle seat is preferred where practical.
Set-up and cleaning
A qualified therapist or technician should install and adjust it. Spex asks for a check for wear or loose bolts every six months, and puts the expected life at five years. Outer covers machine wash at 40 C, the incontinence cover is hand wash only, and the hardware takes AHP wipes.
Funding may help: see who may help pay. Our technicians service what we sell through our service department.
We handle the fitting, so tell us about the chair on the quote form or by phone at (905) 798-1853. As this is built to a prescription, our return policy covers made to order seating. More of the range sits under paediatrics.
Frequently asked questions
Which model does my child need?
Bounce suits moderate to low support needs and Space suits moderate to high needs. The therapist's prescription decides it.
Will it fit the wheelchair we already own?
It fits chairs with round canes from 19 mm to 30 mm. Send us the make and model and we check the frame before quoting.
Can the child stay in the seat in the car?
Spex crash tested it to WC20, so it can be used as a vehicle seat on a suitable base.
