Description
The Thigh Support covers the muscle above the knee rather than the joint. Tynor builds it for a pulled hamstring, a strained quadriceps or a bruised thigh, and the maker also names trauma and burn management, where the sleeve holds a dressing in place and keeps the area warm.
Two layers, two jobs
Cotton sits against the skin and takes up sweat, which is what keeps the sleeve from itching on a warm day. The outer layer is nylon, for wear, and the air trapped between the two layers holds body heat in, which is how the maker designs warmth into it.
The knit and the shape
The fabric stretches in all four directions, so it follows the thigh instead of pulling against it, and the sleeve is tapered: wider at the top, narrower above the knee, so it grips where the muscle is.
Which size to order
Small fits a mid-thigh of 37.6 to 44 cm, Medium 44 to 50 cm, Large 50 to 56 cm and Extra large 56 to 62 cm. Measure about 15 cm above the knee with the leg straight. The maker's catalogue also lists an XXL of 62 to 68 cm, which is not carried here.
What goes with it
A sleeve supports the muscle while it heals; the leg still has to be kept off the ground if walking hurts. The aids that take weight are in the walkers and wheelchairs sections, and the rest of the room is under patient room products.
Where a thigh injury is part of a wider mobility problem, funding may help with the cost of the equipment that goes with it, and we can assess the home before anything is chosen.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the measurement taken?
Around the mid-thigh, about 15 cm (6 in) above the knee, with the leg straight and the tape level. Small starts at 37.6 cm and Extra large ends at 62 cm.
Will it slide down the leg when I walk?
The maker tapers the knit so it grips where the thigh is widest and narrows above the knee, and the four-way stretch follows the leg. The maker does not publish a grip or stay-up figure.
Can it be worn over a dressing?
The maker names trauma and burn management for this sleeve, so it can hold a dressing in place. A dressing that needs changing often needs a clinician's advice on what goes over it.
Is this a knee support or a thigh support?
It is a thigh support: a straight tube that covers the muscle above the knee. It has no patella opening and no hinges, so it is not a substitute for a knee brace.
