This page is one Span-Care Convertible size: 80 inches long, 36 inches wide and 7 inches high. Other lengths and the 42 inch models are different codes.
Who it is for
- Span lists the surface for prevention in high-risk patients and for treatment of stage 1 to 4 pressure injuries. The care team decides if that matches the person.
- On a 36 inch model the limit is 500 lbs (227 kg). In powered mode Span lowers that to 400 lbs (181 kg). Use the lower number whenever the control unit is running.
- A 42 inch Span-Care is rated higher. Do not use the 42 inch numbers on this 36 inch mattress.
- Other air surfaces are on hybrid mattresses.
With power and without it
- With no control unit, Span calls it non-powered reactive air: air cylinders and relief valves set the immersion. It does not need a pump to be used.
- Span says to add the digital control unit when powered therapy is needed. That unit selects alternating pressure, a comfort setting, and a timed auto-firm mode, and it has an audible low-pressure alarm.
- We have not confirmed that SC803629 includes the unit. Tell us if you need powered modes before we order.
- The control unit weighs 6.3 lbs and is UL listed. The mattress itself weighs 20 lbs.
Fit, cover, warranty
- The deck should be about 36 inches wide and 80 inches long. Recheck the rails after it is on the bed. Health Canada recommends openings inside the rail stay under 120 mm (4 3/4 in). A powered air replacement can compress and open a larger gap, so the fit still needs a check. See hospital beds and the size guide.
- The top is Span's Geo-Matt surface. Span says the Heel Slope further reduces heel pressure. Air cylinders run head to foot.
- The cover is Span's LifeSpan fabric: bi-directional stretch, described as antimicrobial, and made to stand up to bleach and other disinfectants. Wash steps are not printed on the spec block.
- Core warranty is 5 years, non-prorated. Cover warranty is 2 years. The control unit, if you have one, is 18 months. See warranty service.
- SC85V29 is the recessed-deck version. Its edge shape is not this mattress.

Does SC803629 work if it is never plugged in?
Yes. Span sells it as a non-powered air surface. Powered modes are an add-on.
Why are there two weight limits?
500 lbs with no power. 400 lbs while the control unit is in a powered mode.
Is the recessed-deck mattress the same code?
No. The recessed-deck Span-Care is SC85V29. This page is the flat-deck 80 by 36 inch model.
