Description
The Spex Flex wheelchair cushion is a modular, adjustable cushion for people with symmetrical or asymmetrical limited hip flexion. Spex builds a strategic positioning base under the foam, and its pads and wedges are set up on the spot.
Configuring the base
Removing frontal wedges from one side accommodates asymmetrical limited hip flexion and from both sides symmetrical limited hip flexion, and moving wedges between sides covers a lack of hip flexion on one side with a lack of hip extension on the other. Pelvic obliquity pads adjust with them.
The frontal segments lock apart for hip abduction: each component gives 10 degrees, so two give 20. The bevelled front edge leaves room for knee contractures.
Sizes, contours and weight limits
The maker sells a standard 3 cm and a high 5 cm contour, in seat widths of 12 to 20 in and lengths of 14 to 20 in, one item code per size and contour. A made to measure size is quoted; the cushion is 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) high.
Widths of 12 to 15 in carry 200 lbs (90 kg) and widths of 16 to 20 in carry 300 lbs (136 kg). The 2019 manual prints 350 lbs (160 kg) for the wider sizes, confirmed with Spex on the quote.
Covers, care and warranty
A wipe-down Spextex incontinence cover sits under a washable breathable spacer fabric outer cover. The outer cover washes at 40 C and drip or tumble dries on low, the inner cover is hand wash only and the foam is kept dry.
The maker's expected cushion life is five years. The 24 month warranty covers the covers, foam unit and positioning base, and excludes wear, tears, punctures and abuse.
Ordering and funding
Each cushion is quoted with its size, contour, colour and configuration, so send the seat width and depth and we confirm the item code and price. Funding may help: see who may help pay.
Claims go through our service department, cushions are listed under wheelchair cushions, a made to order cushion is non-returnable under the return policy, and measurements go on the seating quote form.
