Description
The Spex Flex Cushion is a modular foam wheelchair cushion with a strategic positioning base under the foam. The maker describes it as a contoured, adjustable cushion for symmetrical or asymmetrical limited hip flexion and extension, and says the base lets the fit be reworked on the spot rather than fixed at the factory.
It sits in our foam cushions and wheelchair cushions ranges, or under the Sunrise Medical brand.
Will it fit your seat?
- The maker builds 16 sizes from 12 in by 14 in to 20 in by 20 in, the seat width by the seat depth.
- The maker's item numbers are 1106 plus the width and depth plus 0SC or 0HC.
- Weight capacity follows the width: 200 lb up to 15 in wide, 350 lb from 16 in.
- The maker's size and contour code for the build is confirmed on the quote, so give us the seat width and depth and we match the maker's own code to it.
What can be changed on the spot?
- A front facing wedge is fitted each side and comes out one at a time, which is what sets the angle for a limited hip flexion.
- The thigh wedges, three a side, and the pelvic obliquity pads, five a side up to 15 in deep and six a side at 16 in and deeper, adjust the same way.
- Two abduction wedges and their cover can be added if the thigh section needs opening out.
What comes with it?
- Every cushion ships with an outer cover, an incontinence cover, the foam unit and the positioning parts fitted.
- Use both covers together; the maker says going without the incontinence cover shortens the cushion's life.
- Clean monthly with hydrogen peroxide wipes, and do not bleach, iron or dry clean.
- The maker gives a five year expected lifetime and a 24 month warranty, and states the cover and foam meet California Technical Bulletin 117.
Frequently asked questions
Which contour should I order?
Standard Contour is the maker's default, the build pictured on its own sheet. High Contour and SuperHigh Contour come on request; SuperHigh is listed as a non-trial option.
Does it need an assessment?
The maker recommends a clinician skilled in wheelchair seating decides whether the Flex suits you. Send us the seat width and depth for a quote.
Can it be changed after it is fitted?
Yes, that is what the positioning base is for. The wedges and pads can be moved or trimmed later, and the maker lists spare covers, a rigidiser, a 5 degree wedge and a phone bag separately.
Are spare covers available?
Yes, in nine colours including Chilli Red, Ocean Blue, Royal Purple and Black.
