Description
The Spex Standard wheelchair back is a modular back support for most adult chairs. Spex builds it around a contouring cube system, so the back surface can be reshaped as posture changes.
How the contouring works
The foam is a grid of cubes rearranged on the spot to give more support where the torso needs it. Spex says the contours do not slip out of adjustment, and the cover opens at the top so the cubes can be reached with the back on the chair.
The ventilated shell moves air through the back, and its slots and hole positions take lateral supports, head supports and harnesses.
Shapes, sizes and weight limits
Sunrise lists three shapes: Rectangle, which fits between the wheelchair canes, T, which sits in front of them, and the newer Surface style, which also sits in front and supports the shoulders and pelvis more.
Thirty three sizes run from 10 in wide x 12 in high to 20 in wide x 23 in high, one item code each, with made to measure widths up to 25 in quoted. The 10 to 15 in backs carry 200 lbs (90 kg), the 16 to 20 in backs 300 lbs (136 kg).
Cover and mounting
An expansion fabric inner cover sits under a washable breathable spacer fabric outer cover, in two layers with air-mesh side panels that counter moisture.
Hardware is chosen separately: Quad Mount is the default, with Dual Mount and a Heavy Duty Quad Mount as options. The back suits most manual and powered chairs with vertical canes of 0.75 in to 1 in tube, but not chairs without canes.
Ordering and funding
Every size is quoted: tell us the width, the height, the shape and the mount you want and we confirm the item code and the price. Funding may help: see who may help pay.
Backrests sit under wheelchair backrests, and Spex is part of Sunrise Medical. Made to order items are non-returnable, so see the return policy and send measurements on the seating quote form.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the right size?
Measure the wheelchair, not the person: the back is built to the chair's width and the height you want behind the torso, over 10 to 20 in wide and 12 to 23 in high.
Can the contouring be changed after fitting?
Yes. The cubes are rearranged on the spot, and the cover opens at the top so they can be reached without removing the back.
What does the warranty cover?
Twenty four months from purchase on the foam, the covers, the positioning unit and the hardware; punctures, tears and burns are excluded.
