Frequently asked questions
What is a patient lift?
A patient lift (also called Hoyer lift) is a mechanical device that safely transfers patients who cannot support their own weight. It lifts and moves people between bed, wheelchair, toilet, or bath, reducing injury risk for both patient and caregiver.
Does ADP cover patient lifts?
Funding depends on the device and your situation. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first. March of Dimes' Home and Vehicle Modification Program may help eligible people with ceiling track lifts, and some people have coverage through WSIB, Veterans Affairs or private insurance. We prepare the quote and product details those programs ask for.
Do you rent patient lifts?
Yes, we rent patient lifts including slings and offer delivery throughout Toronto and the GTA. Rentals are ideal for post-surgery recovery, respite care, or temporary mobility needs.
What is the difference between a floor lift and ceiling lift?
Floor lifts (Hoyer lifts) are portable and can move between rooms. Ceiling lifts are permanently installed on a track system, offering smoother transfers with less physical effort. Ceiling lifts are ideal for frequent transfers and can cover bathroom to bedroom.
What sling do I need for a patient lift?
Sling selection depends on the transfer type and patient needs. Universal slings work for most transfers. Toileting slings allow bathroom use. Bathing slings are mesh for water drainage. We assess your needs and recommend the right sling style and size.
How much weight can a patient lift hold?
Standard patient lifts have a capacity of 400-450 lbs. Bariatric lifts are available with capacities up to 700-1000 lbs. Always choose a lift rated above the patients weight for safety. We help you select the appropriate capacity.
Can one person operate a patient lift safely?
Yes, modern patient lifts are designed for single-caregiver operation. Electric lifts do the heavy lifting with a button press. However, some facilities require two-person lifts for safety protocols. Proper training is essential for safe operation.
Do you install ceiling track lifts?
Yes, we install ceiling track lift systems in homes throughout Toronto and the GTA. Installation includes the track, motor, sling, and training. We can install straight tracks, curved tracks, and multi-room systems depending on your home layout.
Where can I buy a Hoyer lift in Toronto?
We sell floor lifts, sit-to-stand lifts and ceiling track systems across Toronto and the GTA, with delivery, setup, sling fitting and training for carers. Some people have coverage through WSIB, Veterans Affairs or private insurance.
How much does a patient lift cost in Canada?
Prices depend on the type of lift: manual and electric floor lifts cost less than ceiling track systems, which are priced after a free home assessment. March of Dimes' Home and Vehicle Modification Program may help eligible people with ceiling track lifts. Rentals are also available.
What is the difference between a Hoyer lift and ceiling lift?
A Hoyer lift (floor lift) is portable and moves on wheels - good for occasional transfers and multiple rooms. A ceiling lift is permanently installed on a track system - smoother transfers with less caregiver effort, ideal for frequent daily transfers. Ceiling lifts can connect bathroom to bedroom.
Is there an income limit for ADP?
No. ADP has no income test: Ontario residents with a valid health card and a qualifying long-term physical disability may be eligible. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first.
How often can I get new equipment through ADP?
ADP sets a usage period for each device type; for example, a wheelchair is usually replaced no sooner than every five years. After the usage period you may qualify for a replacement if you still need the device, and sooner if your needs change significantly.
Can I upgrade my ADP equipment?
Yes. You can choose features beyond what ADP approves and pay the difference. You pay your share plus the cost of any upgrades, and we show you both before anything is ordered.
What documents do I need for ADP application?
You need a valid Ontario health card and an assessment by an ADP authorizer (usually an occupational or physical therapist). The application has sections for you, for the authorizer and for us as the ADP registered vendor; your authorizer will tell you if a physician also needs to sign. We guide you through gathering everything.
