Frequently asked questions

What types of wheelchairs are available?

We offer a complete range including: manual wheelchairs (standard, lightweight, ultra-lightweight), power wheelchairs (indoor, outdoor, all-terrain), transport chairs for caregivers, and specialty wheelchairs including tilt-in-space, reclining, and bariatric models for various mobility needs.

Does ADP cover wheelchairs in Ontario?

Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first. An ADP authorizer (usually an occupational or physical therapist) assesses you, and we prepare the quote and complete the vendor section of the application.

Do you offer wheelchair rentals in Toronto?

Yes. We rent manual and power wheelchairs by the week or month, which suits recovery after surgery, travel or trying a chair before you buy. We deliver across Toronto and the GTA; ask us about delivery to your address.

How do I choose the right wheelchair size?

Wheelchair size is determined by seat width, depth, and height. We measure you to ensure proper fit - a wheelchair should support your thighs without pressure behind the knees, and the seat width should leave about 1 inch on each side. Proper sizing prevents pressure sores and improves comfort.

What is a tilt-in-space wheelchair?

A tilt-in-space wheelchair tilts the entire seat and back as one unit while maintaining the hip angle. This redistributes pressure, helps with positioning, and improves comfort for users who spend extended time in their wheelchair. Ideal for those at risk of pressure sores.

How long do power wheelchair batteries last?

Power wheelchair batteries typically last 1-2 years with daily use. On a full charge, most power wheelchairs can travel 15-25 km depending on terrain, user weight, and battery size. We recommend charging overnight for best battery life.

Can power wheelchairs be used outdoors?

Yes, many power wheelchairs are designed for both indoor and outdoor use. Outdoor models have larger wheels, higher ground clearance, and more powerful motors for uneven terrain. We help you choose based on your primary use environment.

What is the difference between a transport chair and wheelchair?

A transport chair has small wheels and must be pushed by a caregiver - it cannot be self-propelled. A wheelchair has large rear wheels that the user can push themselves. Transport chairs are lighter and more portable, ideal for appointments and outings.

Where can I buy a wheelchair in Toronto?

Visit one of our showrooms in Etobicoke or Brampton to try manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs and transport chairs before you buy, or book a free home assessment. We deliver across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham and the rest of the GTA.

What is the best power wheelchair for outdoor use in Canada?

For outdoor use in Canada, we recommend power wheelchairs with larger wheels, higher ground clearance, and weather-resistant components. Popular outdoor models include the Quickie Q700, Permobil M3, and Pride Jazzy. All-terrain power wheelchairs handle snow, grass, and uneven surfaces common in Canadian winters.

How much does a power wheelchair cost in Ontario?

Power wheelchair prices depend on the base, seating and controls you need, from compact indoor chairs to rehab chairs with tilt and recline. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first.

Does OHIP or ADP cover wheelchairs in Ontario?

OHIP does not pay for wheelchairs directly; the Assistive Devices Program does. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first. We prepare the quote and the vendor section of the application.

Is there an income limit for ADP?

No. ADP has no income test: Ontario residents with a valid health card and a qualifying long-term physical disability may be eligible. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first.

How often can I get new equipment through ADP?

ADP sets a usage period for each device type; for example, a wheelchair is usually replaced no sooner than every five years. After the usage period you may qualify for a replacement if you still need the device, and sooner if your needs change significantly.

Can I upgrade my ADP equipment?

Yes. You can choose features beyond what ADP approves and pay the difference. You pay your share plus the cost of any upgrades, and we show you both before anything is ordered.

What documents do I need for ADP application?

You need a valid Ontario health card and an assessment by an ADP authorizer (usually an occupational or physical therapist). The application has sections for you, for the authorizer and for us as the ADP registered vendor; your authorizer will tell you if a physician also needs to sign. We guide you through gathering everything.
