Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a walker and rollator?
A walker has no wheels and must be lifted with each step, providing maximum stability. A rollator has wheels, hand brakes, and usually a seat for resting. Rollators are easier to move but require more balance. We can help you choose the right one.
Does ADP cover walkers and rollators?
Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first. We prepare the quote and vendor section.
How do I choose the right walker height?
The walker handles should be at wrist height when standing with arms relaxed at your sides. Most walkers are adjustable. Proper height prevents hunching or reaching, reducing strain on your back and shoulders. We measure and adjust during delivery.
What is a knee walker or knee scooter?
A knee walker is an alternative to crutches for foot or ankle injuries. You rest your injured leg on a padded platform and push with your good leg. It provides better stability and mobility than crutches during recovery from surgery or fractures.
Can I use a rollator outdoors?
Yes, many rollators are designed for outdoor use with larger wheels (8 inches or more) for handling sidewalk cracks and uneven surfaces. Look for rollators with pneumatic tires and sturdy frames for best outdoor performance.
Do rollators fold for transport?
Yes, most rollators fold for easy transport and storage. Side-folding rollators are compact for car trunks. Some ultra-light models weigh under 15 lbs. We can demonstrate folding mechanisms to ensure you can manage it independently.
What accessories are available for walkers and rollators?
Popular accessories include baskets, trays, cup holders, cane holders, oxygen tank holders, and seat cushions. Some rollators have built-in seats with storage underneath. We can customize your walker or rollator to fit your lifestyle.
Is there an income limit for ADP?
No. ADP has no income test: Ontario residents with a valid health card and a qualifying long-term physical disability may be eligible. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first.
How often can I get new equipment through ADP?
ADP sets a usage period for each device type; for example, a wheelchair is usually replaced no sooner than every five years. After the usage period you may qualify for a replacement if you still need the device, and sooner if your needs change significantly.
Can I upgrade my ADP equipment?
Yes. You can choose features beyond what ADP approves and pay the difference. You pay your share plus the cost of any upgrades, and we show you both before anything is ordered.
What documents do I need for ADP application?
You need a valid Ontario health card and an assessment by an ADP authorizer (usually an occupational or physical therapist). The application has sections for you, for the authorizer and for us as the ADP registered vendor; your authorizer will tell you if a physician also needs to sign. We guide you through gathering everything.
Rollators: A Perfect Blend of Support and Mobility
At Mobility Specialties, we understand the importance of maintaining independence and mobility for individuals with limited strength or balance. Rollators, often referred to as rolling walkers, are an excellent solution for those seeking extra support while walking. Whether you’re looking for a rollator in Mississauga, Etobicoke, or anywhere in the GTA, this guide will help you understand their benefits, types, and how to choose the right one for your needs.
What is a Rollator?
A rollator is a mobility aid designed to assist individuals in walking safely and comfortably. Unlike traditional walkers, rollators are equipped with wheels, making them easier to maneuver. Most rollators also feature a built-in seat, allowing users to rest when needed, and are ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.
Benefits of Rollators
Rollators offer numerous advantages, making them a popular choice for individuals with limited mobility:
-
Improved Mobility:
- Rollators provide a stable and supportive frame, allowing users to move more confidently and independently.
-
Ease of Use:
- With wheels that glide smoothly, rollators require less effort to operate compared to standard walkers.
-
Built-In Seating:
- Many rollators come with a padded seat and backrest, providing a convenient option to rest during longer walks.
-
Storage Options:
- Equipped with storage baskets or pouches, rollators allow users to carry personal items, groceries, or other essentials.
-
Versatility:
- Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, rollators can handle a variety of terrains, including sidewalks, parks, and shopping centers.
-
Enhanced Safety:
- Features like hand brakes, sturdy frames, and anti-tip designs ensure a safe walking experience.
Types of Rollators
There are several types of rollators available, each catering to specific needs:
1. Three-Wheel Rollators
- Lightweight and compact, these rollators are ideal for navigating tight spaces.
- Suitable for indoor use or smooth surfaces like shopping malls.
2. Four-Wheel Rollators
- Provide greater stability and are perfect for outdoor use on uneven terrains.
- Often include a built-in seat and storage basket.
3. Heavy-Duty or Bariatric Rollators
- Designed for larger individuals, these rollators have higher weight capacities and wider frames.
- Built for durability and extra support.
4. Compact or Travel Rollators
- Lightweight and foldable, these rollators are easy to transport and store.
- Ideal for users who need a portable option for travel or occasional use.
5. Hybrid Rollators
- Function as both a rollator and a transport chair, allowing caregivers to push the user when needed.
- Perfect for individuals who may tire easily during longer outings.
How to Choose the Right Rollator
Choosing the right rollator depends on your specific needs and lifestyle. Here are some factors to consider:
1. User’s Mobility Level
- Assess how much support you need. For example, if you require maximum stability, a four-wheel rollator may be the best choice.
2. Weight Capacity
- Check the rollator’s weight capacity to ensure it can safely accommodate the user. Bariatric models are available for heavier individuals.
3. Portability
- If you plan to transport your rollator frequently, look for a lightweight, foldable model.
4. Terrain
- Consider where you’ll primarily use the rollator. For uneven outdoor surfaces, choose a model with larger wheels and sturdy construction.
5. Comfort Features
- Look for features like a padded seat, adjustable handles, and ergonomic grips to ensure maximum comfort.
6. Storage Needs
- If you plan to carry items like groceries or personal belongings, choose a rollator with a spacious storage basket or pouch.
